Port Hedland cleared for $4bn downstream iron ore plant
Summary
Approval granted for the $4 billion Port Hedland iron (PHI) project, including a hot briquetted iron (HBI) and pellet plant.
Facility will process 3–3.5 million tonnes of Pilbara iron ore annually, producing around 2 million tonnes of HBI.
Project backed by South Korean steel-maker POSCO and located in the Boodarie Strategic Industrial Area.
Includes supporting infrastructure such as hydrogen production, carbon capture, and renewable energy targets by 2050.
Expected to diversify Port Hedland's economy and significantly increase Australia's iron ore export revenue.
Next regulatory step involves approval from Native Title holders.
